Larsen’s appointment pays off

Magesi FC’s appointment of Clinton Larsen early last year has proven to be a masterstroke.

Larsen, who’s one of the most experienced coaches in South Africa, had been out of the picture for three years when Magesi came knocking. In appointing Larsen, the club’s management had done its homework to identify the right candidate.

“It’s been three years since I have been out of the NFD or the PSL, but I didn’t just see this as an opportunity to get back,” said Larsen, during his unveiling at Meropa Casino in Polokwane in January 2023.

“What excited me about the project was number one Coach Jacky (Ledwaba) wanted me here, and that means the world to me. Number two, there are players at the club that I have considered before,” added Larsen.

Overcoming struggles

At the time, Dikwena tša Meetse were struggling to stay afloat in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, battling in the relegation zone.

Larsen hit the ground running and the team finished the 2022/23 campaign in 12th place.

It set the tone for what was to happen in the 2023/24 season, when Magesi went on to clinch automatic promotion to South Africa’s top-flight – the DStv Premiership.

The journey with Coach Larsen continues, as we await the start of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.
