One of South Africa’s biggest publications, Sowetan, has looked at a few key factors that helped Magesi win the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) 2023/24 title.
Experienced coach and playing personnel
Mentored by Clinton Larsen, who previously coached several top-flight sides such as Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows and Chippa United among others, Magesi’s squad is mainly made up of tried and tested players who have played years both in the Betway Premiership and in the National First Division.
Goalkeeper, Elvis Chipezeze, played for Baroka in the top-flight and has several caps for Zimbabwe. Striker Rhulani Manzini is a veteran who turned out for AmaZulu, Chippa United and Platinum Stars in the past. Almost half of Magesi’s squad has Premiership experience.
Effectiveness in front of goals and having multiple sources of goals
Dikwena tša Meetse, as Magesi are also known, netted 45 goals from 30 MFC matches. Only Casric Stars scored more than Magesi, with 46.
Mcedi Vandala and Wonderboy Makhubu finished amongst the League’s top scorers with 11 and 10 goals respectively, while Tshepo Matsemela scored five.
Impressive away record
Magesi were brilliant on the road. In a nutshell, Larsen’s charges won 10 of their 15 away fixtures with just two defeats and three draws, while scoring 23 times and conceding just 12 times away. Magesi’s away form was superior than any other team in the League.
